Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience to start karate? No experience is needed to start training at Cedar Heart School of Karate-dō. Our karate classes in Victoria are beginner-friendly and designed to help students learn at their own pace. Whether you are a child, teen, or adult, we introduce the fundamentals step by step in a supportive and respectful environment.

Are your karate classes good for beginners? Yes. Our beginner karate classes are designed for students who may be trying martial arts for the first time or returning after time away. Students learn foundational karate techniques such as stances, punches, blocks, kicks, movement, and kata while also developing confidence, focus, discipline, and coordination.

What age can children start karate? Our kids karate classes are designed for children ages 6–12. Students learn traditional karate in an age-appropriate way, with a focus on confidence, discipline, listening skills, coordination, and respect. If your child is close to age 6, please contact us to discuss whether the class may be a good fit.

Will karate make my child more aggressive? No. Traditional karate teaches self-control, respect, discipline, and good judgment. Students learn that karate is for self-defence and personal development, not for starting fights. While children practice punches, blocks, kicks, and kiai in class, these are taught in a structured and controlled environment with a strong emphasis on respect and responsibility.

What are the benefits of karate for kids? Karate can help children build confidence, focus, self-discipline, coordination, balance, and physical fitness. Our youth karate classes in Victoria also emphasize respect, etiquette, perseverance, and positive training habits that can carry into school, home, and everyday life.

Is karate good for adults? Yes. Adult karate classes offer a full-body workout while also developing focus, discipline, mobility, strength, and stress relief. Many adults start karate because they want something more structured and meaningful than a typical fitness class. No previous martial arts experience is required, and adults train at their own pace.

Am I too old to start karate? No. Karate is for people of many ages and ability levels. Whether you are 15, 35, 55, or older, you can begin training at your own pace. Our teen and adult karate classes are structured to support beginners while still offering a rewarding long-term martial arts practice.

Do I need to be in shape before starting karate? No. You do not need to “get in shape” before starting karate. Karate training helps improve fitness gradually through movement, warm-ups, stretching, strengthening exercises, basic techniques, and kata. Students are encouraged to work within their ability and improve step by step.

What should I wear to my first karate class? For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing is fine. Students should wear clothing that allows them to move easily. Karate is practiced barefoot, and students can purchase a karate uniform later once they decide to continue training.

What style of karate do you teach? Cedar Heart School of Karate-dō teaches traditional Wado-ryu karate. Wado-ryu is a Japanese karate style that emphasizes movement, timing, balance, and harmony rather than force alone. Our school is a member of the Wado Karate Association of Canada.

What happens in a typical karate class? Classes usually include a structured warm-up, mobility and fitness exercises, basic karate techniques, stances, punches, blocks, kicks, movement drills, etiquette, and kata. Students also learn focus, discipline, respect, and traditional karate terminology in a supportive group environment.

Is karate the same as self-defence? Karate includes practical self-defence skills, but traditional karate-dō is much more than self-defence. Training develops awareness, confidence, control, discipline, and character. Students learn that avoiding conflict and using good judgment are always the first priorities.

Over time, many children become more comfortable speaking, moving, and training alongside others in a supportive environment.

Is karate good for children who have lots of energy? Yes. Karate gives energetic children a structured and positive way to move, focus, and develop self-control. Our youth karate classes in Victoria include movement, fitness, basic techniques, listening skills, and etiquette. Students learn to use their energy in a focused way while developing discipline, confidence, and respect for others.

Can parents and teens train together? Yes. Our teen and adult karate classes are open to students ages 13 and up, which means parents and teens can train together.
