Our Classes

At Cedar Heart School of Karate-dō, training is rooted in traditional Wado-ryu principles and delivered in a structured, respectful environment. Each class develops both technical skill and personal character.

Karate is not only self-defense — it is lifelong training of body and mind.

Students develop:

  • Discipline – Consistent effort, focus, and attention to detail

  • Respect & Etiquette – Proper dojo manners, humility, and awareness

  • Confidence – Earned through steady progress and achievement

  • Physical Fitness – Improved endurance, coordination, and athleticism

  • Strength & Stability – Functional body strength and strong foundational stances

  • Flexibility & Mobility – Safe, progressive range of motion development

  • Mental Focus – Concentration under pressure

  • Self-Control – Responsible application of technique

Class Structure

Each session follows a purposeful and traditional format:

Junbi Undo (Preparatory Exercises)

Classes begin with structured warm-ups to prepare the body safely for training. These exercises build cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility, flexibility, balance, and core strength.

Kihon (Fundamentals)

Practice of stances, strikes, blocks, and movement patterns. Emphasis is placed on posture, alignment, breathing, and precision.

Kata (Forms)

Traditional sequences that cultivate timing, rhythm, body control, and deeper understanding of technique.

Etiquette & Discipline

Respect is practiced, not just discussed. Students learn proper bowing, dojo conduct, and how to train with humility and focus.

Youth Classes (Ages 6–12)

Youth training builds coordination, listening skills, confidence, and positive habits. Clear expectations and consistent structure help students develop perseverance and respect while enjoying active, engaging classes.

Teen & Adult Classes (Ages 13+)

Teen and adult classes provide focused, traditional training. Beginners are supported carefully, while experienced students refine technical detail, body mechanics, and mental discipline.

At Cedar Heart School of Karate-dō, classes are structured, progressive, and grounded in tradition. The goal is steady development — strong bodies, disciplined minds, and respectful character that extends beyond the dojo.

Land Acknowledgment

Cedar Heart School of Karate-do is a school built on the values of integrity, loyalty, and honour. We are committed to reconciliation, and with this small step and action, we acknowledge that our students live and train on the Traditional Lands of the Lekwungen (Songhees) Nation, the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) Nation and the WSANEC (Saanich) Nation.

Identity Statement

Cedar Heart School of Karate-dō reflects our commitment to traditional training grounded in harmony and strength of character.

In Wado, a School to Peace, students cultivate discipline, resilience, and balance. Inspired by the enduring cedar forests of the West Coast, we strive to build strong roots, steady hearts, and harmonious practice both inside and outside the dojo.
